Top Ten Most Misspelled Business Words That Kill your Credibility

Top 10 Misspelled Business Words

Nobody gets it perfect all the time, but some words just get misspelled (or misspelt - both are good) constantly on websites, business emails and social media posts. It’s usually not that we don’t know how to spell them, they are just very easy to mistype if we're not paying attention.

Of the most commonly misspelled words in the English language, 7 of them are frequently used in business-speak. That’s a bit of a bummer.

But we have Grammarly for that stuff, right?

Yes, word checkers and auto-correcting software are great for catching all those little typing transgressions that we make, over and over again. But isn't there a small part of you just wanting to check that you have the top ten misspelt words down? Here they are, along with some mnemonics to help you, so you'll never be caught out again.

  1. Business

    - surely not! But yes. There's no 'I' in team, but there's an 'I' 'in' bus'in'ess.
  2. Calendar

    - instinctively, you'd think there were two 'll's. I say 'lend me your calendar'.
  3. Accommodate

    - includes accommodation and accommodating. They're all just evil, evil words.
  4. Definitely

    - as in, your client base is definitely 'finite' if you have too many typos in your copy.
  5. Occurrence

    - 'cc', 'rr' and an 'ence' No mnemonic, just learn it:)
  6. Foreseeable

    - I see be'fore' me - is a good way to remember there's an 'e' in there.
  7. Recommend

    - think to recommend someone with a good 'comment'
  8. Separate

    - keep 'a rat' separate from your chickens to remember this word's spelling.
  9. Achieve

    - just as with 'chief', the old saying from school, 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'!
  10. Apparently

    - apparently my 'parents' had me.  I think they're not so sure:)
Getting the basics right is crucial if you want to write good content that sells your business; clients can be very picky - and rightfully so, as typos in your content can suggest that you make mistakes in other places too.  Some of these are pretty tricky to be fair, so I expect most of us will have at least one or two that we occasionally (another commonly misspelt word:) mistype. Whether you have these words down or not, do always give your content another proofread, just for good measure. I always find things I've missed! Your clients - and your business - will thank you:) Side note: another in the top ten of misspelt words in the English language; 'Misspelt' 🙂 [DISPLAY_ULTIMATE_SOCIAL_ICONS]
