Nobody gets it perfect all the time, but some words just get misspelled (or misspelt - both are good) constantly on websites, business emails and social media posts. It’s usually not that we don’t know how to spell them, they are just very easy to mistype if we're not paying attention.
Of the most commonly misspelled words in the English language, 7 of them are frequently used in business-speak. That’s a bit of a bummer.
But we have Grammarly for that stuff, right?
Yes, word checkers and auto-correcting software are great for catching all those little typing transgressions that we make, over and over again. But isn't there a small part of you just wanting to check that you have the top ten misspelt words down? Here they are, along with some mnemonics to help you, so you'll never be caught out again.
-
Business
- surely not! But yes. There's no 'I' in team, but there's an 'I' 'in' bus'in'ess. -
Calendar
- instinctively, you'd think there were two 'll's. I say 'lend me your calendar'. -
Accommodate
- includes accommodation and accommodating. They're all just evil, evil words. -
Definitely
- as in, your client base is definitely 'finite' if you have too many typos in your copy. -
Occurrence
- 'cc', 'rr' and an 'ence' No mnemonic, just learn it:) -
Foreseeable
- I see be'fore' me - is a good way to remember there's an 'e' in there. -
Recommend
- think to recommend someone with a good 'comment' -
Separate
- keep 'a rat' separate from your chickens to remember this word's spelling. -
Achieve
- just as with 'chief', the old saying from school, 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'! -
Apparently
- apparently my 'parents' had me. I think they're not so sure:)
